Perfume myths revealed: What's really true?

There are many myths and supposed insider tips surrounding perfume. But which of these are actually true—and which are just fragrance myths? We'll clarify the most common myths so you're well-informed when buying and wearing perfume.

1. “Perfumes last longer in the refrigerator.”

Partly true. Cool, dark storage protects the fragrance molecules from deterioration. But be careful: Too cold temperatures or humidity in the refrigerator can alter the ingredients. Better: room temperature, away from light and heat.

2. “An expensive perfume always lasts longer.”

Wrong. The shelf life depends on the concentration (Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette) and the ingredients – not the price. A high-quality Eau de Parfum can last longer than a significantly more expensive Eau de Toilette.

3. “Rubbing your wrists destroys the fragrance.”

True. Rubbing breaks down the molecules, and the scent changes. Better yet, spray and let it work gently on your skin—without rubbing.

4. “Every scent smells the same on every person.”

Wrong. Your skin chemistry, diet, and pH level influence how a scent develops. That's why the same scent can have completely different effects on two people.

5. “Perfume has no expiration date.”

Wrong. Perfumes also age. After about 3–5 years, the scent changes, especially if stored improperly. It lasts longest if stored in a dark, cool, and airtight container.

Conclusion

Many perfume myths persist – but with the right knowledge, you can enjoy your fragrance better and keep it fresh longer.
